Beautiful by afternoon

In reality, many of us will clear out by mid morning but yesterday proved that it's pretty hard to clear out mid level clouds this time of the year...so I'm erring on the side of caution. (Don't think I don't notice ((double negative FTW)) when my forecast is off by even a few hours. I said clearing by noon yesterday and I was annoyed straight through 2 PM, when the sun finally broke out. It's a tough game since no meteorologist will EVER be 100% right, but I keep trying anyhow.) Either way, the sun will be shining by this afternoon and calm conditions will last all the way through around noon on Wednesday.

Today: A fizzling cold front is currently pushing through northern and Downeast Maine at around 40 MPH (now if another cold front leaves from New Hampshire going 25 MPH faster, which will reach the coast first? #SATquestion). Shower activity is minimal and, at this point, confined to the northern 1/3 of the state. The boundary is behaving itself nicely, moving cleanly off the coastline, so clearing should take place rapidly from southwest to northeast through the morning. Sunshine will be statewide by this afternoon and temperatures will push into the low 70s in many spots.

Tonight: Clear and chilly. Temperatures will drop into the 30s in many locations, with some low 40s along the coastline due to the moderating influence of the ocean.

Monday & Tuesday: With a big ridge of high pressure in control of the weather, look for mostly sunny skies and pleasant conditions on both day. Temperatures will dip a bit on Monday, staying in the mid 60s, before rebounding to the low 70s by Tuesday afternoon.

Our next chance of rain will come with a front moving through on Wednesday afternoon. It's just a garden variety boundary so showers will move through quickly and we will clear out in time for Thursday. It will be a bit cool Thursday with air rushing in from Canada, but nothing crazy...generally in the low 60s.

Not related to weather: I watched the original Nightmare on Elm Street last night as part of my yearly Halloween horror movie marathon. I hadn't seen it in a while and it held up in most regards as still creepy and brilliant HOWEVER there was on scene that made absolutely no sense to me now that I'm an adult. The girl (Nancy) has been having nightmares about Freddy for weeks and now refuses to sleep for fear of meeting him again. Soooo her mom takes her down to the basement and informs her that she and an angry band of parents actually burned Fred Krueger alive many years ago. SOMEHOW she thinks this will help Nancy sleep better. Are you kidding me? You think it's comforting to know that the man haunting my dreams is actually a victim of a gruesome murder that runs in the family? That's the most inane thing I've ever heard.

Marge: You want to know who Fred Krueger was? He was a filthy child murder who killed at least twenty kids in the neighborhood. Kids we all knew.
Nancy: Oh mom.
Marge: It drove us all crazy when we didn't know who was doing it, but it was even worse when they caught him.
Nancy: Did they put him away?
Marge Well, the lawyers got fat and the judge got famous, but someone forgot to sign a search warrant in the right place and Krueger was free, just like that.
Nancy: What did you do, mother?
Marge : A bunch of us parents tracked him down after they let him go. We found him in an old abandoned boiler room where he used to take his kids.
Nancy: Go on.
Marge : We poured gasoline all over the place, then left a trail of it out the door. Then lit the whole thing up and watched it burn. But he's dead, Nancy. He can't get you because mommy killed him. I even took his knives [unwrapping the cloth, showing the glove]. So it's okay. You can sleep now.
