(NEWS CENTER) -- The hottest day of 2013 was July 19, with a high temperature of 95 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.The average summer high temperature is usually in the 70s. Because Mainers aren't accustomed to extreme summer heat and many don't have central AC, it is easy to feel ill during the hot days.
To avoid dehydration or heat stroke, the most important thing is to drink water. Even though a cool alcoholic beverage or soda might sound appealing, these types of drinks can dehydrate the body. For those hiking or being active, it is necessary to bring plenty of water.
Inside the home, avoid using the stove or oven, which heats up the house. Use air conditioning if you have it, or go somewhere with it to cool down. Spending time inside a public library, restaurant or even a grocery store with air conditioning can provide necessary relief to the body.
The elderly and children are at the highest risk for heat illness, along with pregnant women. The signs of heat related illness, like heat rash are rather mild, and include sunburn, a rash and heat cramps. Others illnesses like heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and dehydration can be more severe.
