BAR HARBOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - 36 holes of golf wasn't enough for a winner at the 50th annual Paul Bunyan golf tournament at Kebo Valley Golf Club. So, it took four holes to whittle down a four-man playoff with Stonington's Sam Grindle winning the event on the fourth playoff hole.
Grindle added to his trophy collection by besting best Jack Wyman of Falmouth with a birdie for the title. In 2012, Grindle won the Class 'C' boys individual state golf championship in his senior year at Deer-Isle Stonington.
Mattanawcook Academy and Husson University alum Lance Bernier, who also was in the playoff, was eliminated after a bogey on the first playoff hole.
Defending champion Ricky Jones, who shot his way into contention with a low-round of two-over par 72, was the fourth member of the playoff but didn't participate having left the golf club hours earlier figuring his score wouldn't remain atop the leaderboard. After shooting a seven-over 79 in the first round of the tournament at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono on Saturday, he was forced to tee at 10:30 a.m. instead of 2:30 p.m. when the leaders began their round.
