Defensive battle on deck for UMaine in season opener
ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The University of Maine football team is just two days away from beginning its title defense.
The Black Bears were out on the field at Alfond Stadium Thursday for one of their final practices before hosting Norfolk State on Saturday night.
Maine is opening the season against Norfolk State for the second year in a row.
Last year, the Black Bears opened the season with a 23-6 win over the Spartans.
Norfolk state finished last year ranked 13th in the country in total defense, and Coach Cosgrove knows this one will be another battle.
"They've got a lot of guys back, that's going to put a lot of heat on our offense to respond and play smart, be disciplined and all those kinds of things. We're pretty excited about our defense as well, we think that we can do some things with our defense that will present problems to them and maybe create a turnover or two, a momentum change, field position jump, something like that," said Cosgrove.
Redshirt sophomore Dan Collins will start at quarterback for Maine. Coach Cosgrove announced the decision during his radio show on Thursday night.
Kick-off is set for 6:00 PM, Saturday, at Alfond Stadium in Orono.
