Dr. Sima Samar has risen through adversity and discrimination in her native country of Afghanistan to help spread human rights
Dr. Sima Samar is a human rights activist from Afghanistan. Her focus is women's rights. She says her home country has come a long way but there's still more work to be done. She has faced an incredible amount of adversity in her life, being a woman from a minority population in Afghanistan, she managed to get an education. And she has fought passionately for human rights ever since, even coping with losses like the disappearance and likely death of her husband in 1984. He was among 500 educated people who were kidnapped that year, never to be heard from again.
Dr. Samar was in Maine for a meeting at USM for a celebration of WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
