INDIANAPOLIS — A 22-year-old woman has been arrested in the abandonment of a newborn baby on Indianapolis' Westside.
Briana Holland of Indianapolis was arrested early Saturday morning on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent after a child was found in a trash can Friday night in a bathroom in the United Technology Carrier Corp. warehouse.
Holland was arrested at about 5 a.m. after being questioned by detectives, according to a news release from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Detectives believe that she gave birth at the facility and then abandoned the infant in the bathroom.
Holland was taken to the Arrestee Processing Center to await official charges from the Marion County prosecutor's office.
The baby, which was found at about 8 p.m. Friday, is in good condition at Riley Hospital for Children, police said, and is in the custody of workers from the Department of Child Services.
The gender of the infant has not yet been released.
Indiana has a safe-haven law in which a parent, relative, family friend or others can give up custody of a baby less than 45 days old to a hospital emergency room or police or fire station with no questions asked.
