LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The Lewiston school committee has given its approval for the athletic director to begin selling advertisements for the football and baseball fields.

It is the first time that is being allowed. This fall dozens of advertisements may fill the fencing, press box, and other areas throughout a complex that includes both the football and baseball fields.
The money from those ads will provide a big boost to efforts aimed at upgrading and updating the aging facilities, including a new track and artificial turf.

Athletic Director Jason Fuller says last year he had to turn down thousands of dollars because advertising was not allowed. The morning after the school committee's approval he already had contact with several national and local businesses that want their ads placed there.

"We walked the fields today, there's probably 80 to 100 locations on site for signage. So that could be upwards of $50,000 if things go well", Fuller said.

No ads will be allowed for tobacco or alcohol products. The plan is to have the ads go up by early next month.
