BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Thursday's introduction of the Chicago route is also the first United air line flight to fly out of BIA since the early 1990's. There will be one flight in and out of Bangor International Airport each until July and August when the number of daily Chicago flights will be bumped of to two.
The addition of the United Chicago flight route is an economic boost for the airport as well. At the end of last year, BIA had to let go of some of its personnel due to the decrease in military flights. Now, with the addition of the United air line, the airport was able to bring back five of those employees, as well as hire more.
"The good news is, obviously, our troops were coming home, getting out of the war, certainly a positive thing, but unfortunately it did affect our business. But yes, having an additional service like United in Bangor did give us the opportunity to bring some people back on a part time basis," said Airport Director Anthony Caruso.
Caruso said he hopes that in the future, Bangor International Airport and United do more business, and that more flight destinations are added to the airport's list of flight routes.
