BRUNSWICK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- If you are thinking about adopting a pet, Labor Day weekend might be the right time to do it.
Coastal Humane Society in Brunswick is offering fifty dollar adoptions. It's the final push in a nationwide contest among shelters to find homes for the most animals.
Coastal Humane Society is one of fifty shelters competing in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge. During the past three months, Coastal Humane Society has found homes for 700 animals. Staff at the shelter says as word got out about the contest, the community turned out in droves.
"You don't stop to pick your head up to see the impact that you were making further than what you can view," so having people come into the community into our building from the community lets us realize we are not in this alone the animals aren't in it alone
The Coastal Humane Society was hoping to adopt out 822 animals, but the shelter faced a quarantine due to a ringworm outbreak. They are still in the running to win the top prize in their division - $25 thousand.
