FREEPORT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Imagine riding a bike for thousands of miles across the country... stopping in between... to build homes for families in need.

The Bike & Build Maine to Santa Barbara trip began in Freeport Thursday, where 33 participants gathered from the U.S. and Germany to help build a home with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland.

Team Leader Katy Branston traveled from Memphis, Tennessee to begin the journey.

"I think we just have the pull in our generation, not only for adventure, but to make the world a better place and serve as well," said Branston.

The cycling element of the trip was attractive to Simon Schwarzmaier from Cologne, Germany.

"Cycling is the best way to get to know the county because you are fast but you still feel everything," he said.

The group will begin cycling on Friday by dipping their back wheels in the Atlantic Ocean on East End Beach in Portland. They will complete the trip by dipping their front wheels in Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara, California.
