PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Southern Maine's firefighting community is mourning the loss of Michael Kucsma, a Captain for Portland's fire department and a Deputy Chief in Gorham.

Michael Kucsma's body was pulled from the eastern mouth of Back Cove yesterday; he was with a group of 6 others on a recreational dive.

The group went in near Tukey's Bridge, but by 3:45 Monday afternoon, his unconscious body was pulled onto a dock at the Maine Yacht Center.

His own department responded and tried to revive him, but Kucsma was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say at this point it appears Kucsma died from natural causes, though an autopsy will provide more information.

A memorial has been set up outside of Bramhall Station in Portland where Kucsma was a captain on Engine 6 and counseling services are being offered to those who responded to the call Monday afternoon, and those who worked with him.

Crews were sent home in Gorham Monday night while Buxton covered their calls. Gorham Fire Chief Robert Lafebvre says the support from outside companies has been incredible.
