WOLFEBORO, N.H. (NEWS CENTER) -- The Wolfeboro Chief of Police Stuart Chase has confirmed that Police Commissioner Robert Copeland has resigned.

Copeland has been in the national news since he called President Barack Obama the N-word. On Monday morning, former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney called on Copeland to resign.

The issue came about last week, when Wolfeboro resident Jane O'Toole overheard Copeland using a racial slur in describing Obama. In an e-mail, Copeland acknowledged that he used the word and said he will not apologize.

Police commissioners are elected by voters and are not a part of the Police Department.
