PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Mainers showed their support for Boston and the Boston Marathon Bombing survivors today by giving the gift of life.

The Red Cross hosted the "Find Your Strong" blood drive at the Portland Blood Donation Center. Maine native Karen McWatters lost her best friend, Krystle Campbell, and her leg in the bombing. She needed 14 pints of blood to treat her injuries. Rand says the experience showed her how critical it is to have a strong supply of blood ready for people who need it.

"It was amazing the turnout that day of people who came to donate blood, but it was really the blood that was on the shelves already," McWatters said. "That was what saved peoples lives."

If you are eligible to give blood, you can donate every 56 days. To learn more, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-Red-Cross.
