CUMBERLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Summit Natural Gas held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday as the company begins work on 66 miles of pipeline in Falmouth, Yarmouth, and Cumberland.

Summit hopes to bring natural gas to eight thousand customers in those three towns over the next five years. The $42 million project will bring about 200 local jobs. More than 500 customers have already signed up. Cumberland Town Manager Bill Shane says the three communities worked together to bring the project to the region.

"I think by fall we are going to be all connected," Shane said. "Most of municipal buildings will be connected here and many of the homes will start seeing pipe hopefully by this fall, and that's we're really excited about."

Summit has already installed 130 miles of natural gas pipeline in central Maine.
