KENNEBUNK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Maine Turnpike Authority is responding to complaints from some EZ Pass customers that they were overcharged at the Kennebunk toll plaza.
Maine Turnpike Authority Executive Director Peter Mills says a damaged device in the ground that counts the number of axels caused the errors, so some customers driving south on the Turnpike from Kennebunk were being incorrectly charged. Mills says the Turnpike Authority was aware that the piece of equipment was broken from January until March, but they did not realize it was overcharging motorists. They did not close the affected lane because the only other lane was closed for construction. Mills says the Turnpike Authority released the information once they realized customers' accounts were affected.
"The solution is quite simple," Mills told NEWS CENTER. "We're going to go back through all of the passengers at that time over that piece of equipment and we'll make adjustments to all the accounts."
The Turnpike Authority is encouraging anyone who travels through the affected toll to check their EZ Pass accounts, and contact the Maine Turnpike Authority if you have been overcharged.
