BRUNSWICK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Investigators are looking into the cause of a house fire on Gurnet Road in Brunswick, which is also Route 24.

Firefighters were called around 5 p.m Tuesday. The owners were not home, and it didn't take long for parts of the building to collapse in the fire. It may be difficult to determine the cause because of the extensive damage. The home is a total loss.

Firefighters say the home's location made the fire tough to tackle at first. Brunswick Fire Chief Ken Brilliant said, "One of our biggest challenges is that we're right at the end of the hydrant district, so we're about 1800 feet from the last hydrant. So getting the lines laid in to get man power on the fire -- that took a few extra minutes."

No people were hurt, but firefighters believe the homeowners' dogs did not make it out.. The Red Cross is helping the family.
