PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Maine resident and famed songwriter Bob Crewe is making a major contribution to the Maine College of Art.

Crewe's brother and collaborator Dan Crewe made the announcement Tuesday. The Bob Crewe Foundation is giving MECA a $3 million grant to start a program that combines the study of contemporary music with visual art. Dan Crewe says he thinks it will be a first of its kind program in the country.

"It's a project that is so innovative that I'm not quite sure we can describe where we're going, because that's the whole purpose of this," Crewe said. "We are open, we are innovative. We expect this to be driven as much by the staff and the faculty as it is by the students here at MECA."

In addition to building the program, the money will pay for a sound stage and practice rooms in the lower level of MECA's Congress Street building. The college hopes to offer one or two classes this fall, with a complete minor available in the fall of 2015.
