PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Walk MS is an annual event that brings hundreds of people together to raise money and awareness for multiple sclerosis.
Each person who walks has a story and a unique connection to the disease. 17 year-old Darcie Brown started Team Tom when she was in seventh grade, a few years after her dad lost his battle with MS at the age of 39. She recruits her classmates to raise money with her. This year there are forty Gorham High School students on the team who raised money going door-to-door.
"Going door to door has made us realize that everyone has a connection to MS," Brown said. "Not only are we raising money, but we're spreading awareness."
Team Tom raised more than 14 thousand dollars. That's more than double what they raised last year. That money goes toward research as well as support and services for people living with MS.
