BATH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- It isn't often that labor unions endorse a Republican candidate... but that's what happened today at Bath Iron Works. The unions are endorsing Senator Susan Collins.
President Jay Wadleigh of Local S6 International Association of Machanists said the decision was based on Collins working closely with the shipyard supporting workers.
"We actually made our endorsement before the Democratic candidate even announced. So we work close enough and we know the work that she does and that was the basis of our endorsement," said Wadleigh.
This endorsement also marks the first time all four unions have issued a joint endorsement of a candidate.
Senator Susan Collins said in response, "This is the largest private employer in the state. It's the largest unionized workforce in the state and we've worked so closely together over the years. To win the endorsement of all four of unions is a tremendous honor and one that I'm grateful for."
Senator Collins is running against Democratic candidate Shenna Bellows.
Bellows responded in part by saying, "I'm thrilled that we have twice as many union endorsements as my opponent Republican Susan Collins. Maine unions representing 10,000 workers from all across the state including nurses, electrical workers, steal workers have endorsed my campaign for change... Because I will stand up for working class values."
Voters will head to the polls to decide Maine's U.S. Senator in November.
