PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- There was an accident on I-295 southbound near Exit 5 in Portland late Monday morning. Three people were hospitalized after the four-car crash.

According to Maine State Police Trooper Robert Cejka, a car tried to reenter the highway from the exit's off-ramp, when that car was struck by a second car.

Another car swerved to avoid that collision, and was hit by a fourth car, traveling in the passing lane. The third car flipped over and knocked down an exit sign, according to Cejka.

Three people involved in the accident were taken to Maine Medical Center. One is being treated for lacerations, and Cejka wasn't sure what the other two were being treated for.
