AUBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Homeowners reported seeing smoke outside their window when the fire broke out in the middle section of the home around 2 o'clock on Sunday.
The family of three got out safely.
Winds did not help the situation. The fire spread to the attic pretty quickly.
The Auburn Fire Department received assistance from Poland, Minot, Mechanic Falls, and Lewiston.
The home is not a total loss.
"We're hoping they'll be able to rebuild," said Capt. Donald Flanagan. "Unfortunately, when the fire's in the attic, a lot of water goes into the top of the building and eventually that water drains down and causes a lot of water damage underneath. We've taken what measure we could to protect that, but there is extensive damage throughout the house."
He says Firefighters were able to save a lot of the family's belongings
The State Fire Marshall will determine a cause.
