AUBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- After an extra large delivery Wednesday morning, the Good Shepherd Food Bank has a large quantity of high quality protein, just in time for Easter.

Turner farm Moark LLC., a Land O' Lakes egg subsidiary, has donated 280,000 eggs, or 23,333 dozen, to the Auburn food bank.

The donation would mean about $25,000 for the company, according to Moark Eastern Division General Manager Skip Hagy -- but he says donating them means more.

"It's a good time to make a large donation," said Hagy. "It's Easter. Families get together."

The Good Shepherd Food Bank serves 100,000 individuals living with food insecurity in Maine -- only about half of the estimated 200,000 hungry adults and children.

In recent years, the food bank has been focusing on providing more nutritious food to its clients.

"Protein is one of the most expensive items, typically for most families, and the one they're most likely to go without," said President of Good Shepherd Food Bank Kristen Miale. And so produce, dairy, and protein are like gold for pantries. "It's always so welcome when we see this food truck pull up with wonderfully healthy eggs."

For the third year in a row, Good Shepherd is among food banks nationwide receiving egg donations this month, as part of the United Egg Producers charitable giving program.
