The fire broke out early Monday morning at 716 Brighton Ave.

Firefighters say it started in a front room and spread quickly because the home was tightly sealed for the winter. Damage to the home was significant.

After escaping to safety, the homeowner went to Maine Medical Center to be checked out.

Part of Brighton Avenue had to be closed while firefighters answered the call.
