PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The city of Portland is reintroducing the Chestnut tree to Maine.

Portland's mayor planted two disease resistant trees in the Baxter Woods Forest. Once known as the redwood of the east, the American chestnut was one of the most dominant trees in the eastern U-S.

But a blight overtook the trees during the first half of the 1900's, wiping out the population.
