(NEWS CENTER) -- There are two basic types of communication, both important to relationships, said Marriage and Family Therapist Jack Burke Thursday.
There is the communication that bonds us together, he said. This shows interest and curiosity.
"Most adult love stories start with 'I met this person and we talk all night,'" said Burke.
Data driven isthe other type, like information about kids, dinner time and schedules. Data driven communication can become a habit while the bonding communication goesto the wayside.
"The best kind of communication shows interest in each other," said Burke.
Egos get in the way of listening, saidBurke, because people start adding their two-cents instead of just listening.
"You need to restrain to give any advice unless they actually ask for it," said Burke.
It is an act of love to truly listen, said Burke.
