PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Students at Deering High School met with a human rights leader from Afghanistan today.
Doctor Sima Samar sat down with four young women from immigrant families for a panel discussion. Samar is the chair of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, and she has spent her life working to create opportunities for women in her country.
The students say they are inspired by Dr. Samar's perseverance, and they hope their female classmates heard her message loud and clear.
Mayor Michael Brennan also presented Dr. Samar with a key to the city.
