AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --The Health and Human Services Committeeendorsed a bill that would expand access to a drug that would prevent overdoses Monday.

In a seven to four vote, the Legislative committee supported the bill that allows health care professionals to prescribe Nalcon to a family member or caregiver of addicts. It would also allow more medical personnel, police officers and firefighters to also administer the drug.

The drug counteracts the effects of heroin and prescription painkillers.
