AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --Maine lawmakers will hold a public hearing Mondayabout controversial new mining rules.
In the 1990s, the state mandated there would be no mining in Maine. The Maine Bureau ofEnvironmental Protection signed off on new mining regulations, saying that new technology has made mining safer. The state must examine them before going into effect.
The new rules would allow for mining in areas like Bald Mountain. Those against mining say there would be pollution, potential clean-ups, and effects on Maine's lakes. They also say the rules allow formines on public areas. The BEP wagers that the news rules are based on science and are safe.
