WALPOLE, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Emergency crews spent most ofFriday containing an oil spill after a barge sunk in the Damariscotta Riverearlier in the day.

The accident happened around 8 o'clockFriday morning near an aquaculture farm located in the village of Walpole.

A Lincoln County Hazmat team installed booms around the barge and further upriver to protect the aquaculture farm which cultivates oysters.

The farm pumps ten thousand gallons of water from the river into holding tanks which are used to grow 30 million oysters form the egg stage.

Thanks to a lack of wind and the tide, first responders say oil was largely contained to the area around the farm's dock.

What caused the barge to leak oil is under investigation, but no charges are expected to be filed.
