EAST MILLINOCKET, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Maine's pulp and paper industry has taken another major blow as Great Northern Paper announced Thursday that it will temporarily stop production at its mill in East Millinocket for up to 16-weeks.
Company officials say the suspension in manufacturing is because of the high costs of production mixed with the lower prices being paid for its products. Production officially stopped after the afternoon shift on Thursday.
G.N.P. officials say they are working toward a new business improvement plan while the mill is closed. They also say all 256 workers will stay on the payroll for at least two months. Just last month about 200 employees were laid off from the Lincoln paper and tissue mill.
