DONNER SUMMIT, California (KCRA) -- Pete Christensen has been working in California's foothills and the Sierra for nearly three decades as a Caltrans equipment operator.
He said the type of work Caltrans crews are doing this week is almost unprecedented.
"In 30 years, I've never seen it like this," Christensen said.
What he is referring to is storm-drain work happening along Interstate 80 near Donner Summit this week.
"It is very uncommon for us to be here in January to be doing routine drain work," said Kenny Jenkins, a Caltrans equipment operator.
The dry winter has led Caltrans road crew to undertake the type of maintenance normally seen during the summer.
