WESTBROOK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- There is a new public awareness campaign underway to get people to stop flushing baby wipes down the toilet.

The Maine Wastewater Control Association is partnering with manufacturers of baby wipes to explain why the wipes are so harmful to wastewater treatment facilities. Portland Water District's pumps frequently get clogged with materials like baby wipes. They installed special screens at two of the pump stations in westbrook to help the problem, but those screens cost more than two million dollars a piece.

"The screens do work, they are quite effective in preventing clogging by baby wipes and other items," Portland Water District General Manager Ron Miller said. "But it was an expensive fix to a problem that really had an easy preventable solution."

The campaign will be rolling out a television commercial Wednesday, as well as signs that will be placed in Hannaford stores.
