AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - A Maine landlord has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges in connection with a fire at an Augusta apartment building that led to the death of a tenant.

Ryan Chamberland of Winthrop has pleaded guilty to one count of failing to provide adequate means of egress and nine counts of failure to provide adequate secondary means of escape for occupants of the building.

Sixty-two-year-old John Murray was pulled through a first-floor apartment window by a passer-by who heard his screams for help during the Memorial Day weekend fire. Murray suffered burns and smoke inhalation and died June 6 at the hospital.

Chamberland's attorney says the charges against his client could be dismissed and pleas withdrawn if Chamberland complies with conditions of a yearlong deferred disposition.
