LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - All the tenants of an apartment building on Oxford Street in Lewiston escaped an early morning fire Friday.

Flames broke out at an apartment building at 32 Oxford Street around 3:30 AM Friday. A cause was not initially evident, although it appears to have started on a fourth floor porch.

Lewiston Fire Chief Paul LeClair says all 7 occupants escaped safely. Chief LeClair said the bitter cold of the morning made fighting the flames more difficult for firefighters.

Crews from several neighboring towns responded and firefighters made quick work of the flames. They remained on scene for several hours making sure the fire didn't spark back up or spread.

The Red Cross is helping the people who were displaced.

Investigators will try and determine a cause.
