SCARBOROUGH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Today was the summer kickoff to the Maine Senior Games.

Competitors tried their hand - or feet - at 100 meter heats, discus and other events.

The athletes are vying for a chance to compete in the national senior games.

But for women, the games mean much more.

Most of the athletes were out of school before the historic 'Title Nine' statute was passed in 1972.

So for these women, for the first time in their lives, they get their own place on the track.
