PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The Portland Pirates led by two goals with just oversix minutes remaining in regulation only to be swept out of the Calder Cup playoffs by the Syracuse Crunch, 4-3 in overtime.
Ondrej Palat scored the second of his two goals with 16 seconds left in overtime clinching a three-game sweep for the Crunch in their best-of-five series.
Syracuse outshotPirates 45-18 for the game. Portland only won the shots on goal advantage once this series. That was the opening period of game one.
The Pirates built a 3-1 lead in the third period thanks to goals by Alexandre Bolduc and Nick Johnson.
The Crunch made it a one-goal game with 6:01 left courtesy of Mike Angelidis. Then Ondrej Palat tied the contest with 1:12 remaining in regulation.
Andy Miele scored Portland's on the power playto give the Pirates a 1-0 lead after one.
It's the second time Portland led Syracuse 3-1 in this series before giving up three straight goals and losing in overtime.
It's the third time the Pirates have been swept out of the Calder Cup Playoffs (2001vs. St.John's, 2010 vs. Manchester).
The team will hold exit interviews with the players starting Friday at 11a.m.
