VEAZIE, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- When Matt Qualey recieved the letter in the mail last week naming him as Maine's Small Business Person of the Year, it came as a shock.

Qualeyfirst started his business,Qualey Granite andQuartz, backin 2003 with his brother Justin. Ten years and three locations later they've come a long way. Their45,000 square foot facility produces around 900 square feet of granite and engineered stone a week.

"In this market I do think that this is the way to go. We kind of had to commit to either being very small, or very big," said Qualey. "We are very big and we are going to just continue to grow as long as it makes sense."

Qualey, who is the companies President and Project Manager, has been focused on bringing more jobs to the Veazie area since the business first moved to that town in 2010. Around 18 people work there now, with as many as 5 positions expected to be added during the coming weeks.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced it's state winners of the Small Business Person of the Year Award last week. Qualey was surprised to find out that he was the Maine winner.

"You kind of forget about these things and it is nice to have the confindence from someone else and kind of remind you that you are doing something good for the community," said Qualey.

Now that Qualey has been picked as the Maine business person of the year, he will travel to Washington D.C. in June to compete against the other 50 state's recipients for the national award.
