KENNEBUNK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- An investigator from the State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a fire in a vacant building on Port Road in Kennebunk.

The building serves as housing for seasonal workers of the White Barn Inn, and ironically, was being renovated, and had just been equipped with a sprinkler system last week. When firefighters got there, a little after 6:15 this morning, flames were shooting through the roof of the attic.

Chief Stephen Nichols says the attic fire was stubborn and took a long time to put out because of hidden spaces.

"But the sprinkler system kept it from coming down into the second floor into the living area," Chief Nichols said. "Had there been anybody there, it would have given them the time to get out that they needed."

Mutual aid from Kennebunkport and Wells assisted in putting out the fire.
