LIBERTY, Michigan (WILX) -- For family, the tragedy is still setting in.
Late Saturday afternoon emergency vehicles were called to the home of a Jackson County, Michigan sheriff's deputy in Liberty Township.
Police say a 4-year-old boy had accidentally shot himself.
He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
According to Cammy Rose, the boy was the son of Deputy Mark Easter.
"My heart is broken for my cousin," said Rose, who is the cousin of Easter's wife, Melissa. "He was definitely taken from this world too early."
Lon Zicafoose lives across the street from the Easters.
He says the deputy had just left for work when it happened and quickly returned.
"Bolted in the house. A couple minutes later, he came back out and was noticeably distraught," he said.
