ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- As many of us are preparing for Thanksgiving, the UMaine women's basketball season is underway, but the Black Bears have gotten off to a little bit of a slow start this season.

The Black Bears are currently one and four, but their early non conference schedule has had games against Auburn, Syracuse, Minnesota, and they beat UNLV.

Head Coach Richard Barron said it is good to play teams from bigger conferences to see where his team is at, and see what areas the team needs to improve at.

"Our teams have benefited from that. Seeing what the highest level of basketball is like and what we have to do, as we aspire to play at that level," Barron said.

"We're trying to turn Maine around. We wanna be at a level like those, those programs. It's a great test to see where we are, how far we have to get to be at one of those, well, like one of those programs," Junior Guard Ashleigh Roberts said.

The Black Bears begin conference play Jan. 5 against UMBC.
