Do you know a man or woman who is:
- Helping people find adequate housing, or access to much-needed mental health care
- Serving children in need
- Reaching out to isolated elders
- Lending professional talents to non-profit organizations
- Making sure that hungry people have enough to eat
- Caring for animals in need
- Protecting the environment
This is just a short list of the ways that quiet heroes in our part of Maine and New Hampshire are helping others every day.
Be a hero yourself: honor a volunteer by nominating that person for 6 WHO CARE.

After the recipients are chosen, we have the distinct honor of telling their stories to the whole community. Hosted by NEWS CENTER anchors Pat Callaghan and Cindy Williams, the 6 WHO CARE Primetime Special treats viewers to some truly exceptional people - men and women from throughout Maine who unselfishly make a difference in the lives of others. One outstanding volunteer is presented with the MARY RINES THOMPSON AWARD, a recognition award of the United Way of Greater Portland since 1985. Each year a non-profit agency is honored with the AGENCY OF DISTINCTION AWARD. Each winner is presented with a cash award to be donated to the charity of their choice.
Any adult volunteer is eligible for a 6 WHO CARE Award. Mary Rines Thompson nominees must have served as a volunteer for at least 5 years. Any adult member of the community may nominate a volunteer. Agencies may "self-nominate" for the Agency of Distinction Award.
6 WHO CARE was developed by WCSH 6 in partnership with the United Way of Greater Portland and TD Bank.
