(NEWS CENTER) -- The art of an apology is an important part of all relationships.

"A good, honest, specific apology allows both people to move on," said Jack Burke, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

A good apology acknowledges a specific behavior, said Burke. Whether it is being late or forgetting to do something, admitting to tt is relieving to the other person. The next step is the apologist recognizes how it affected the other person. The last step is to express some honest regret.

Burke said humans aren't perfect and there's a chance mistakes will repeat, but it's necessary to make the effort to not to do it again.
