Dan Sonenberg's opera "The Summer King" tells the tragic tale of Josh Gibson, one of the greatest baseball players ever. Gibson was black and died just months before Jackie Robinson made his debut with the Dodgers. 207
The Summer King is a unique modern opera. Firstly, it was funded through the online crowd-funding page Kickstarter. Secondly, it's about baseball. Dan Sonenberg, who wrote the production, says that opera is well suited for a story about baseball because both share moments of high suspense between quick bursts of action. And thirdly, it tells a tragic story that mixes Opera with race, history and the story of one of the greatest men to ever play baseball, Joshua Gibson.
