USM and Bowdoin 'Spread the Word' for Special Olympics Maine

Highlights from Unified Basketball and Bowdoin vs USM

GORHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A double dose of kindness at a double-header.

Members of the men's and women's basketball teams from USM and Bowdoin weren't the only athletes lighting up the court  on Thursday. Special Olympics stars showed off their skills twice.

The evening full of games in Gorham was dedicated to raising awareness for the "Spread the word to end the word" campaign, which aims to end the use of the r-word. Athletes wore t-shirts with the slogan in their school colors as the warmed up.

At halftime during both games, Special Olympics athletes hit the court to showcase their skills. They were joined by USM and Bowdoin players for a unified basketball scrimmage. Some amazing shots were made and the crowd went wild for each bucket-- showing support for the athletes who use the game to affect positive change.

"We take a lot of things for granted on a day to day basis as in general as a population, " says Samantha Allen, USM women's basketball head Coach. "It's really humbling to be a part of this experience and see exactly how great we have it and how much we can boost up others."

Both Polar Bear teams walked away with wins Tuesday night, 94-53 was the final score in the women's game and 84-72 for the men. They also both maintain perfect 5-0 records.
