CHICAGO (NEWS CENTER) — Former University of Maine linebacker and Westbrook native Trevor Bates was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL Draft Saturday night.
Bates' name was called 18th during the 7th round as the 239th overall pick.
The last Mainer to be selected in the NFL Draft was Lewiston native Gerry Raymond in 1982.
Bates is the first Black Bear to be drafted since Kendall James was selected by Minnesota in 2014.
He's the 16th UMaine alumnus to be selected by a team at the draft.
Bates' fellow Black Bear, center Bruce Johnson, signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Another former Black Bear, Mike Kozlakowski, was reportedly invited to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers minicamp.
