UMaine pitcher Lawrence signs deal with Tampa Bay Rays

ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Despite not hearing his named called in the 40-round Major League baseball draft, University of Maine pitcher Tommy Lawrence will have a shot to make it to the majors.

The 6'0", 195 pound right-hander has signed a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.

A year after being voted the America East pitcher of the year as a junior, Lawrence concluded his collegiate career with an America East first-team and all-New England second-team selection this past season.

He led the Black Bears with an 8-5 record and 3.18 earned run average.
