Las Vegas, NV (SportsNetwork.com) - Webb Simpson carded a 5-under 66 on Sunday
as he rolled to a 6-stroke win at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
Simpson, who earned his fourth career victory on the PGA Tour, finished the
tournament at 24-under-par 260.
"This year I felt like I have gotten better. I just haven't gotten a win and I
was close at Hilton Head, but we've been working hard and it's just nice to
finish the year off with a W and get back to Hawaii," stated Simpson.
Ryo Ishikawa (65) and Jason Bohn (66) shared second place at TPC Summerlin at
18-under, while Charley Hoffman (64) finished alone in fourth at minus-17.
Luke Guthrie (64), Troy Matteson (64), Charles Howell III (65) and Chesson
Hadley (70) tied for fifth place at 16-under 268.
Simpson began the day with a 4-stroke lead, and quickly added to that
advantage with back-to-back 15-foot birdies at the second and third to move to
His lead was never really threatened from there.
Simpson's cushion shrunk to no smaller than five as he parred his next five
holes, and another lengthy birdie putt from just inside 15 feet at the ninth
capped an outward 32 and gave him a 6-stroke lead over five players.
Among that group was Bohn, who capped a run of five birdies over an eight-hole
stretch with consecutive gains at the 11th and 12th to pull within four of the
lead at 18-under.
A 3-putt bogey at the 12th cut Simpson's lead to three, but he bounced right
back with three birdies over his next four holes to pull away for good.
He parred his final two holes, including a curling 25-foot putt at the last,
to close out the big win.
"I was playing, good solid golf. I didn't look at any leaderboards all day,
but the course is drying out and I knew it was playing tough," Simpson said
about his approach during the final round. "That 3-putt kind of set me back a
little bit, but it was nice to birdie 13 ... and then I made a couple more
birdies, which is a good feeling."
NOTES: Simpson's total of 260 tied Ryan Moore (2012) for the 72-hole
tournament record ... Seven of Simpsons last eight rounds at TPC Summerlin
have been at 67 or better ... Ishikawa's share of second place matched his
best career finish on the PGA Tour. He also finished second at the 2012 Puerto
Rico Open ... Bohn has never shot an over-par round in 20 career rounds at the
Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
