SACO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The Maine Sabers reaffirmed their standing as a top 20 team in the national semi-pro football rankings as they held off their rivals Southern Maine 23-21.
The Sabers (7-0) took control of the game early courtesy of a lengthy punt return by former UMaine defensive back Anthony Hicks in the first quarter, which led to a Stephen Goodrich field goal for the game's opening score.
Later in the quarter, Hicks intercepted a deflected pass by Raging Bulls QB Alexis Colon and returned it for a touchdown.
The loss drops Southern Maine to 5-2. Both of their defeats were to Maine.
