Bastad, Sweden (Sports Network) - World No. 1 Serena Williams was an easy
second-round winner Thursday at the $235,000 Swedish Open tennis event.
Williams waltzed past Georgian Anna Tatishvili in 61 minutes in 6-2, 6-3
fashion on the red clay at Bastad Tennis Stadium.
The reigning French and U.S. Open champion is now a perfect 25-0 on
clay this year and 48-3 overall in 2013.
Williams' quarterfinal opponent on Friday will be fifth-seeded Spaniard
Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
Meanwhile, surging Romanian Simona Halep was cooled off Thursday by veteran
Flavia Pennetta, as the Italian was leading the second-seeded Romanian 4-6,
7-5, 2-0 when Halep retired with an undisclosed injury.
The 21-year-old Halep was fresh off winning her third title in four events and
had won 17 of her previous 18 matches.
Also on Day 4, Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp ousted sixth-seeded Ukrainian
Lesia Tsurenko 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 and France's Mathilde Johansson dropped
Venezuelan qualifier Andrea Gamiz 7-5, 6-2. Johansson was last year's Bastad
runner-up to Slovenian Polona Hercog.
Friday's other quarterfinals will pit third-seeded Czech Klara Zakopalova
versus Hogenkamp, eighth-seeded Swede and 2011 Bastad runner-up Johanna
Larsson against Johansson, and Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano versus Pennetta.
The 2013 Bastad titlist will claim $40,000.
