Stuttgart, Germany (Sports Network) - Fabio Fognini rallied from a set down to
capture the Mercedes Cup title on Sunday.
The fifth-seeded Fognini posted a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over German crowd
favorite Philipp Kohlschreiber to become the sixth first-time ATP titlist of
the season. Hours earlier, Argentina's Carlos Berlocq became the fifth player
to join the list with his Swedish Open triumph.
Fognini, 26, was the second Italian to reach the final at Stuttgart after
Andrea Gaudenzi was the runner-up in 1994.
It was Fognini's third appearance in a final, following setbacks last year in
Bucharest and St. Petersburg, Russia, and his first win in three lifetime
meetings with Kohlschreiber.
The second-seeded Kohlschreiber fell to 4-6 in title matches, including 0-3
this year. Six of his 10 finals have been contested on German soil.
Kohlschreiber was vying to be the first German champion in Stuttgart since
Michael Stich in 1991.
